WHAT IS STAIR?

Start The Adventure In Reading-Annapolis is focused on one thing: READING!

What Is STAIR

Second grade is a critical turning point in a child's educational development. Through second grade, children learn to read; after second grade, they read to learn. Research has shown that students who are not successful readers by the end of second grade are at greater risk of falling behind throughout their academic career.

STAIR-Annapolis works closely with educators and reading specialists in Anne Arundel County Public Schools to identify second graders currently reading below grade level. These students are matched with a dedicated volunteer tutor for twice-weekly, one-on-one sessions tailored to each individual student's ability. STAIR is offered to families free of charge and tutoring sites are strategically located to help alleviate transportation issues and other potential barriers to participation.

Building relationships between student and tutor is at the heart of what we do. Each child works with the same tutor every week and receives caring, undivided attention during the entire hour-long session. They read together, play word games, complete writing exercises, and practice basic literacy skills like phonics and vocabulary. The bonds formed in these sessions benefit both student and tutor in real and lasting ways.

Tutoring sessions are the foundation of the STAIR-Annapolis mission, but we're about much more than weekly literacy practice!

We hold several special celebrations throughout the academic year, including a winter party, Read Across America Week, and a STAIR graduation ceremony. In 2016, we proudly launched our newest endeavor: The STAIR Summer Readers' Theater.
