STAIR – Start The Adventure In Reading, is a 12-year old literacy-tutoring program in Annapolis and Anne Arundel County. In May of 2017 we proudly graduated 80 students at nine sites in the city of Annapolis and greater Anne Arundel County. In the fall, we hope to tutor 100 students at ten sites with the support of over 160 volunteers.
Students, selected by their respective school’s reading teacher, in the second grade work with STAIR tutors twice a week for one hour after school at schools and community centers around the City of Annapolis, Crofton and Edgewater to improve their reading fluency and comprehension.
You can help transform a child’s life. No experience is necessary. We provide the curriculum and a two-hour training session held on the campus of the First Presbyterian Church of Annapolis at 171 Duke of Gloucester Street.
STAIR wants to make sure that each tutor has the confidence needed to effectively work with these at-risk children. That is accomplished through our focused training sessions and the inclusion of presentations by reading experts like Sarah Bell* and Dessolene Davis**, both of the Anne Arundel County Public School system. (See below for a video of Sarah Bell’s recent presentation.)
The need is great and you can make a tremendous difference in the life of a child!
